Old friends and supporters of Dick Taverne will be delighted to see him back in Lincoln when he visits to start the Liberal Democrat International Duck Race this Sunday. Lord Taverne will launch the race from the quayside at Brayford Pool at 1.00 pm. The event is due to finish at 1.30 pm by the footbridge over the River Witham, adjacent to the Witch and Wardrobe public house.
Organiser, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate, Reg Shore, said, “I am absolutely thrilled that Lord Taverne is coming to see us here in Lincoln and taking part in our fund-raising event. He is a very busy man so the fcat that he has given up some of his valuable time in order to start our humble, ‘Duck Race’ is magnificent! It will give all his fans, friends and acquaintances the opportunity to say hello and on the same day, enjoy the exciting Lincoln 10K race, as well as the International Duck Race. Everyone is welcome to attend and it’s free!”
Baron Taverne was the MP for Lincoln after his 1973 victory. His success opened the possibility of a realignment on the left of British politics, which took shape in 1981 as the Social Democratic Party (SDP), which Taverne joined; joining the Liberal Democrats when the party merged with the Liberal Party.
